Night Sky App Review

There are some great astronomy apps out there, but one of my favorites to help view our stellar night sky is the stellar Night Sky app. It just so happens to be the “App of the Day” today in Apple’s AppStore!

It feels oh-so-magical to simply point your phone at the sky and have an interactive map of 1.7 billion stars literally at your fingertips! Complete with constellations and Greek mythology names, it’s as much an educational tool as it is a party trick and just plain fun for even the least scientifically inclined.

I love using Night Sky for quickly identifying celestial objects. In fact, just last weekend I pulled 10 girlfriends out of our fancy rental house in wine tasting country to point out Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars as they shone brightly in the early night sky. Without Night Sky, as one friend put it, “they just look like stars”.

Night Sky’s optional “stargazing conditions” notifications are my daily reminder to look up. We should all do more of that. Plus it’s a fun bonus to be notified when the International Space Station is flying by overhead or when any of my "Sky Tag" objects (aka my favorite objects) is visible. Right now I'm desperate to see Messier 8, the Lagoon Nebula, and I'm patiently awaiting Night Sky to alert me when it's visible at night.

I haven’t yet tested out their augmented reality planetary models feature, but if it’s anything like their amazingly cool video of our solar system featured in the AppStore today, then I think I’m going to love it. Prepare to be amazed! View it in the AppStore
