It’s World Space Week!

World Space Week is an annual celebration declared by the United Nations!

More than 90 countries here on Earth are celebrating World Space Week from October 4-10. This year’s theme, “Women in Space”, celebrates the contributions women have made to space sciences and the space sector.

Wondering how to celebrate? There are 1,875 registered events happening around the world this week (though pre-pandemic there were 7,767 events!), more throughout the month, and surely even more online! This world map shows in-person events by location.

Highlights this year include events from the Space Foundation, The SETI institute, The Planetary Society, The International Astronomical Union, and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (yes, that is a thing!). View details here.

Teachers can bring World Space Week into the classroom! Here are some space-themed activity guides that will make learning fun and inspire more kids to reach for the stars. Parents and Homeschoolers can also use these guides.

• World Space Week’s Activity Guide for grades K-12

• World Space Week’s Heinlein Guide for Science and Language Arts for grades 5-9 in English or Spanish. This lesson plan and activity guide is designed to accompany the novel Have Space Suit—Will Travel by Robert A. Heinlein.

What an amazing idea for humans to celebrate the universe around us together!
